A Note from Recreate Responsibly

A Note of Gratitude from Recreate Responsibly

Dear Recreate Responsibly Community,

What a year it’s been together! We want to end our 2022 with wholehearted gratitude for you, for your communities, and of course, for time spent in nature.

In 2022, we launched more resources for recreation including a new Water Safety Edition, a Camping Edition, and Wildfire Editions in English, Spanish, and Korean! Our collaborative working groups are currently working on launching a new Wildlife Edition and relaunching our popular Winter Edition.

With the re-emergence of the Federal Interagency Council on Outdoor Recreation, our collective efforts were recognized by the White House and called out in the 2022 US National Tourism Strategy. We also brought the community together in our first #FortheLove social media campaign, which received a highlight in Grist.org

In 2022:

  • We grew our Recreate Responsibly community to nearly 4K members.

  • Recreate Responsibly content can be found in 11 different languages.

  • 90K posts have been tagged #RecreateResponsibly on IG alone.

Happy New Year!

We partnered with like-minded organizations and coalitions like: Together Outdoors, the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative, Trails are Common Ground, Outdoorist Oath, and the Hollywood Climate Summit, with whom we held the first Create Responsibly panel!

As we move into the next year of the Recreate Responsibly Coalition, we’re reflecting on our binding sentiment for 2023:

"If we positively influence outdoor behavior and expand ecosystem understanding by providing clear, consistent and accessible messaging, platforms for collaboration, and elevating marginalized voices then people will learn from one another and inclusively engage in nature safely and responsibly and ultimately be compassionate stewards of our communities, land & water."

More to come in January, but until then, thank you again for being part of the movement to recreate responsibly. We’re all in this together, and there is much more work ahead. We look forward to continuing to shape the future of the outdoors with you.

Already feeling excited for the new year?

Here are a few things to look forward to:

  • Take a First Day Hike on January 1st! On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states, part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country.

  • Mark your calendars for the next Recreate Responsibly State of Recreation quarterly convening on Friday, January 13th at 11:30 AM Eastern / 8:30 AM Pacific.

  • Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is thrilled to announce the launch of the TrailNation™ Collaborative—a nationwide peer-learning community that welcomes professionals, leaders, and advocates from across sectors and agencies who are working to establish and grow trail networks across the country. Get involved and join them for the launch of the collaborative on January 19, RSVP for the virtual event here.

We've been taking a few quiet weeks during the holidays to rest and recharge, and we hope to see you back in action for the quarterly State of Recreation call!

Sending gratitude, joy, and warmth,

The Recreate Responsibly Coalition
